Autocross Rules
The purpose of the Motorsports Northeast Autocross is to challenge and improve driving skills in a safe, controlled environment. Nothing needs to be changed or added to your vehicle, but the vehicle must pass a safety inspection and there are common-sense safety procedures which must be followed. It is each driver's responsibility to read and observe the following rules. This document should be read in conjunction with the Autocross Manual found on our website.

GENERALS
Speed limit of 5 mph in the pits. The pit area is not for warming up tires, or other high-speed activities. Failure to slow down after the finish line in the allotted space is also a violation. If you are not compliant with these regulations, there will be serious repercussions. First offense, your fastest run will be eliminated. Second offense, you will be asked to leave the event, and no times will count towards the event. Third offense, your will be banned from future Motorsports NE events.
Each driver must wear an "M" or "SA" rated helmet carrying a 1995 or later Snell Memorial Foundation approval sticker. For those purchasing a new helmet, a 2005 "SA" rated helmet is strongly recommended, but an "M" rated helmet is acceptable. If you don't have a helmet, the Club has a limited number of loaner ones that could be used.
Everyone must have his or her driver windows down at all time. If there is an instructor in the car both windows must be down at all time.
All sunroofs should be either removed or fully closed.
All Motorsports NE Autocross events are FULLY MUFFLED EVENTS. A car having a noisy exhaust system will be prevented from participating. Autocross sites are becoming increasingly scarce, with one of the main problems being excessive noise.
Metal-to-metal seat belts, securely anchored are required.
Sneakers, tennis shoes or other rubber-soled shoes are recommended. High-heels, sandals and the like will not be allowed.
Roll Bars are recommended but not required for all open cars.
Vehicles with Nitrous Oxide kits are not allowed to participate. The bottle must be removed before coming to the Safety Inspection.
All cars must pass an on-site safety inspection. All loose articles within the vehicle (including floor mats) must be removed prior to the safety inspection. Children’s seats must be removed prior coming to the Safety Inspection. Having the car inspected is the responsibility of the driver. A car that has not been inspected will not be allowed to compete. Late inspections are at the convenience / discretion of the Tech Inspectors. They DO NOT have to inspect your car beyond the published allotted Safety Inspection time windows.
Cars / drivers not following the Motorsports Northeast Rules could be subject to protest by any participant. If a Protest is upheld, it may result in disqualification from the event, reclassification or other changes as determined by the Motorsports NE Rules Committee and Event Chairperson.
A driver may only enter one (1) car in an event.
A maximum of two (2) drivers are allowed per car and drivers must run in different run groups.
All Novices (Rookies that have participated in under 5 Autocrosses) will be marked with the letter “R” for ‘Rookie’ on the car’s windshield so that a Motorsports NE instructor will recognize those needing instruction for the first 2 runs of the day.
No passengers are allowed on any timed runs, except for pre-approved Motorsports Northeast Instructors.
Should "fun" runs be provided at the end of the event, it is restricted for cars that have been registered and having passed the Safety Inspection can participate. A passenger is allowed on the “fun run” but they have to sign the waiver and wear a helmet.
Working at a flagging station, or other workstation assigned is MANDATORY for all drivers. Failure to obey this requirement could impact, at the discretion of the Event Chairperson, to forfeit points, times and/or future participation. WE MUST ALL WORK TO PLAY!!! First offense participant’s times do not count. Second offense participant sits out one event and pays fine of $20 for the next time they show up. Third offense you will be asked not to participate for the rest of the season.
The 10 Car Rule; Re-runs are to be completed during the same session. You may cut in line and allow at least 10 cars to precede you during the current sessions. If you have more than one re-run for the session, complete one, and go to the end of the line of cars taking re-runs and take the next one but ensuring the proper spacing between runs of 10 cars.
All Motorsports NE Committee members and instructors that are working the event that day, have the right to take their runs at their leisure throughout the course of the day as long as they observe the 10 car rule. These individuals will have a “X” or some other distinction on their cars letting other participants know why they’re cutting in line when needed. Should a Committee member or instructor take their runs in succession, they will not count.
All Motorsports NE Instructors must be available for the first two (2) runs of both first heats. You will be allowed to make up your runs throughout the day. (I.E. 2 runs in each of the first 2 heats, then running in your normal heat in the afternoon.
Instructor Runs are to be clearly notified and pre-cleared with Timing, and do not count toward event points.
Car numbers will be assigned on a yearly basis only.
NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OF ANY TYPE MAY BE CONSUMED BY ANY PERSON DURING THE DRIVING EVENT. THE USE OF ANY ILLEGAL OR REFLEX AFFECTING DRUGS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
CAR CLASSIFICATION
The Club’s philosophy is to classify cars with approximately the same capabilities in each Class. Not only horsepower-to-weight factors in but also handling, drivetrain configuration and performance.
Classes A through G, S, and U are for DOT legal tires only.
Any items, which are not listed/covered by the Modification Points/Free Modification Lists, should be brought to the attention of the Motorsports NE Rules Committee or Tech Inspectors.
The Motorsports NE Rules Committee reserves the right to update/change with rules, classifications as issues arise.

CLASS U – “Unlimited” |
|
|
All cars that are heavily modified out of our stock classes and the modification listing, regardless of their engine displacement and the DOT tire compound that the car is on. Non DOT tires are not allowed in this class. This class includes Class A vehicles that are bumped one class and B vehicles that are bumped two classes, and so on. |
Examples: Most lightly modified A cars (Corvette Z06 with coilovers), moderately modified B cars (Subaru STI with chip and coilovers), Lightweight cars with turbo kits that are not factory installed. ALL engine swaps with a .1 or higher HP/WT ratio (RX-7 with small-block V8) and highly boosted factory turbo cars with moderate modifications. |
|
|
|
|
CLASS R – “Race” |
|
|

|
|
PROPER CLASSIFICATION IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENTRANT.
Competitors should class their vehicles according to the preceding list and the following modification penalty system. The Tech Steward will be responsible for verifying each vehicle’s class at the time of tech inspection. The Tech Steward will also be responsible for initially classing vehicles and modifications not listed herein. Any interpretation of the Tech Steward may be appealed to the Motorsports Northeast Rules Committee by informing the Steward or any other Official. The Steward’s determination will stand unless the Motorsports Northeast Rules Committee determines otherwise prior to the next scheduled event.
MODIFICATIONS
Cars
with MODIFICATIONS will be subject to re-classed to keep the
competition fair and consistent. A modification means removal,
replacement, or enhancement of the indicated part with a part or
enhancement that is not available as a factory-installed option for
that year, make, model and trim level of vehicle. Engine swaps will
be classed on a case-by-case basis to keep such car competitive. The
following modifications incur a point’s penalty. For every 20
points the vehicle receives the car will be moved up one class.
0 – 19 = No Class Bump
20 – 39 = 1 Class Bump
40 – 59 = 2 Class Bump
60 – 79 = 3 Class Bump
80 – 99 = 4 Class Bump
100 points or more go directly to Class U
Light Modifications:
Performance shocks (adjustable or non adjustable) = 5 Points
Springs = 5 Points
Camber plates = 5 Points
Sway bars = 5 Points
Big Brake kits = 5 Points
Weight Modifications:
* The 1st 4 Point modification is free, however if a 2nd modification is performed, all points count. *
Lightweight Hood = 4 Points
Lightweight Trunk = 4 Points
Racing seats = 4 Points
Rear seat removal and all carpeting and/or interior panels behind the Driver / Passenger seats = 4 Points
Replacing of body panels with Lightweight versions = 4 Points

Medium Modifications:
Transmission change or swap, rear gear ratio change, or including tires/wheels with an overall diameter that deviates (smaller) from factory options by 1 inch or more = 10 Points
Differential upgrade (Limited Slip) = 10 Points
Any/All Exhaust System Modification from Exhaust Valve to and including Catalytic Converter (from Cat back is free) =
20 Points for Turbo or Supercharged Vehicles
10 Points for Normally Aspirated Vehicles

Engine Swaps:
All engine swaps will be evaluated on a case by case basis. The basic formula will be Horsepower to Weight, with the drivetrain configuration added in with a one-class bump. When the base class is established all other modifications follow the points system. For all cars that start with a HP / WT value of .100 or greater the base class will be Class U. For example a 1998 Honda Civic EX with an Integra GSR motor (170 / 2515 = .0675 = Class E +1 Class Bump) would be in Class D. A 1993 RX-7 with a V8 LS1 swap (305 / 2826 = .107 = Class A +1 Class Bump) would be in Class U.
